How to download YouTube videos to iPhone or iPad

Apple has cracked down on apps which overtly claim to download YouTube video to your iPhone or iPad. However, it is still possible in iOS 9 and iOS 10. Our step-by-step guide will show you download YouTube videos to iOS.

YouTube promised to introduce offline watching, but this has only happened in the form of YouTube Red, which is an ad-free subscription service that’s only available in the US at the moment.

Update 13 September 2016: iOS 10 is out today. If you’re thinking of upgrading, beware that downloader apps may stop working. We’ve tested out an app which worked successfully in iOS 9 and can confirm it works in iOS 10 (but it’s a good idea to install it before you update to iOS 10). The app is Video Player and File Manager for Dropbox and Google Drive. It’s free, but has ads. A ‘Pro’ version cuts out the ads and costs £2.99.

In iOS 9, we also found you can use Documents 5, which you’ll see over the next few slides.

Alternatively, if you are happy to use a PC or laptop, we’ll show you how to use a free utility to download a video and transfer it straight to your device’s Videos app with just one or two clicks.
